Musikanternas uttåg

Nicanor Markström is 10 years old when he meets the agitator Elmblad at Burefjärden on an August day in 1903. The boy has never seen a man from Stockholm before, and he doesn’t know what Elmblad’s sign means: “social å nanting” [social and something]. Thanks to Nicanor, the socialist receives a rude reception from the workers of the Bure area, and he leaves Västerbotten convinced that he’ll never return. However, this meeting will end up being crucial for both of them.

Musikanternas uttåg is an epic tale from the Skellefteå area by one of Västerbotten's greatest authors, PO Enquist. In his unique voice full of humour, empathy and brutal honesty, PO Enquist describes a handful of colourful human destinies and, at the same time, a crucial era in Sweden’s history. The story takes place during a few decisive years at the beginning of the 1900s when the sawmills line the coast of northern Sweden and dissatisfaction with injustice and suffering begins to grow. In this region where Enquist grew up, two of our largest folk movements collided during that time: the Christian revival movement and the social-democratic labour movement. Both of these became critical in our development towards a democracy. We see how those who previously had no voice find one together and raise it; how people realise that their work and their lives have value -- and that this is worth defending. The fight results in many difficult decisions, sacrifices and setbacks and eventually it becomes clear that there’s always something better than death.
