The Christmas Oratorio – Part 1-3

Bach's classic works turn up the Christmas mood with the Norrland Opera Symphony Orchestra, the opera choir and four soloists! The Christmas oratorio part 1-3 is conducted by Stefan Parkman.

Conductor, Stefan Parkman
Parkman grew up in Uppsala, where his father Allan Parkman was principal at Fjellstedtska school. During his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Stefan Parkman was the leader of the singing group Pigor och Drängar and took up the position of conductor of the Uppsala Cathedral Choir in 1976. Furthermore, he was the conductor of the Enköping Chamber Choir and the YMCA Chamber Choir and led the Royal Philharmonic Choir in Stockholm in the years 1985-93 . He has since worked as conductor and artistic director of the Uppsala Academic Chamber Choir, chief conductor of the Danish Radio Choir, appointed as chief conductor of the Stockholm Radio Choir and chief conductor of the WDR Rundfunkchor Köln.

Parkman has also been engaged by many Scandinavian symphony orchestras and institutions such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm, the Norrland Opera, the Royal Opera, the Gothenburg Opera and the Radio Symphony Orchestras in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berlin. In 2000, he assumed the Eric Ericson Professorship in Choral Conducting at Uppsala University, as the first holder of the professorship . With all his permanent ensembles, Parkman has an extensive record production and over the years has made a large number of premieres, with works by e.g. Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Sven-David Sandström. Tours have been carried out in the USA and Australia, as well as to countless places in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

Amy Foon
Amie Foon's interest in classical music began at the age of 4 when she pretended to play the violin with a toy guitar and a fairy wand. But it took another twelve years before she took her very first cello lesson and realized that cello was one of her great passions. Through the cello and the youth orchestra in her hometown, she got to explore the world of classical music, and she hasn't left it since. Amie also began taking singing lessons as a teenager, but it wasn't until she turned 20 that she decided opera was the ultimate way for her to express herself.

Amie Foon is an employed singer at Norrlandsoperan until the summer of 2023. She returns in several productions, including the opera Hoffmann's Adventures, which is performed during the autumn. She also appeared together with the singer Susanna Levonen as one of the soloists in connection with P2 in the park in Umeå in August.

Elsa Ridderstedt
Elsa Ridderstedt is educated at the Stockholm Opera Studio and the Academy of Opera in Stockholm. For a decade now, she has been a well-regarded soloist around Sweden and is now returning for the third year in a row to Norrlandsoperan. Here she was last seen in the role of Alena in the family opera The Emperor's new clothes in autumn 2021, and before that in the roles of Dama di Lady Macbeth in Macbeth and as Giovanna d'Arco in Love and Politics.

Olof Lilja
The tenor Olof Lilja grew up in Stockholm and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Opera College. The debut as an opera singer took place at Södra Teatern in 1992 as Basilio/Don Curzio in The Marriage of Figaro. He has since appeared in comic and lyrical operatic roles at, among others, the Royal Opera, Norrlandsoperan and Värmlandsoperan and others. Olof Lilja has also established himself as a concert singer, especially as an evangelist in Bach's oratorios.

Staffan Liljas
Bass Staffan Liljas took his master's degree at the Academy of Opera in Stockholm in 2012 and has done roles both nationally and internationally. Staffan is also a very active concert soloist with works such as Monteverdi's Mariavesper, Bach's Magnificat and Christmas Oratorio as well as Handel's Messiah in the repertoire. He is also chairman of the Association for Early Music. In 2021 Staffan recorded his first solo album Baroque Bass.
